Honestly, unless there’s something super time-sensitive or critical, I would just let a few things pile up and fix them in one go to save money. When a cheaper finish is fine
In our view, a closet or a rental hallway does not need a Level 5 wall. Level 4 under flat paint looks right there.
Is it my garage or workshop, where it’s not that important that there is a small hole, because only I go there? Then it’s fine to just do a small repair, even if it’s not ideal. But if it’s a guest room, where it’s super visible and right in your face, then if I had the money, I would invest in a proper fix so it looks ideal.

A phone photo hides what sets a drywall price: how far a stain runs, which texture is on the ceiling, how a seam catches side light. The real number waits for an in-person look at the damage.
Ask the Building Department first, because its 2026 fee sheet does not say which jobs need one. Fees follow project value, $50 up to $5,000 and $150 for $20,001 to $25,000. A permit pulled after the work starts costs three times the normal fee.
Will the patch show once it is painted?
It will if the texture or sheen differs from the wall around it. Bare compound drinks paint and dries duller, so the repair gets primed first. Painting the whole wall from corner to corner hides an edge far better than touching up a square.
Is there asbestos in my popcorn ceiling?
Only a lab test answers that. EPA advises leaving intact material alone and having a trained, accredited professional take the sample. Indiana exempts houses and buildings of up to four units from its inspection rule, but that does not make scraping untested texture safe.
